Calling instructions

We may guide your delivery when you are between 37 and 42 weeks pregnant. Between week 41 and 42 some extra checks will be carried out in hospital. If indicated a spontaneous birth may not be waited for and the delivery will need to be induced. In that case the delivery will take place under the responsibility of the gynaecologist.

If you think the delivery has started you may call us at any time of the day, even in the middle of the night. Your call is never wasted! If we agree on a visit, together we can have a look at what support you need at that time and we will plan the next steps. If this isn’t your first child, the last phase of the pregnancy can progress very quickly. We advise you to inform us as soon as you think the delivery has started.

You should always call us after week 37 in the following situations:

  • When you clearly feel less liveliness than before.

It is normal if you notice that the movement of your baby is a little less strong towards the end of the pregnancy, because there is less space to move around. In case of doubt or an obvious difference compared to the previous days it is important that you call us, at any time of the day.

  • Contraction activity
If you have had contractions for an hour at 4-5 minute intervals lasting 60 seconds, you need to call us. There is little chance that these are preliminary contractions and/or the contractions will fade.
  • Loss of amniotic fluid

Your water may break without you having contractions, this happens in approximately 10% of all pregnancies. It is important that you have a good look at the colour of the amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid is supposed to be a watery white/pink. Sometimes the amniotic water is green/brown in colour. If that is the case, or if the baby’s head had not descended into the pelvis sufficiently during the last check up, then you should give us a call: day or night.

  • Blood loss
A bit of slimy blood loss is normal towards the end of the pregnancy or during labour. However, if the blood loss is bright red and comparable with a normal period, let us know immediately. Safe the blood you lost.
  • Anxiety
If you are anxious you may always call us!
